Technology change is not only a systems project. It is a capability challenge: people need the confidence, context and support to learn new ways of working while the business continues to deliver.

This article has been adapted from a 2018 Future of Learning reflection and updated for SME leaders.

Start with the future you need to operate in

No one can predict the future precisely. Leaders can, however, identify the changes most likely to affect customers, work, skills and business models, then create room to learn before the pressure becomes urgent.

Build learning into everyday work

  • Give teams time to practise new tools on real work.
  • Pair people who are confident with people who are learning.
  • Make it safe to test, question and improve a process.
  • Capture what works so capability does not depend on one enthusiastic person.

Develop a capability portfolio

Different people need different learning: technical confidence, process knowledge, customer understanding, critical thinking and the ability to make decisions in changing conditions. A strong programme combines short teaching, coaching, peer learning and practical experiments.

Keep the business connected to the learning

Capability building should improve a real outcome: better customer service, less rework, faster decisions, safer use of AI or more reliable delivery. Choose a small number of measures and revisit them as the team learns.

A practical starting point

  1. Choose one change that matters to the business.
  2. Identify the behaviours and knowledge it requires.
  3. Give people a safe, supported way to practise.
  4. Review the result and improve the approach.
